Kāpiti HistoryThe Kāpiti Coast (formerly known as The Golden Coast) is the name of the section of the coast of the south-western North Island of New Zealand that is north of Wellington and opposite Kāpiti Island. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Regional Council. Kapiti means "joining" or "boundary": the island was at one time the boundary between the rohe (territories) of two Māori iwi (tribes).![]() Kāpiti Coast District HistoryKAPITI COAST HISTORYHorowhenua District HistoryHOROWHENUA-MANAWATU HISTORYTe Rauparaha, Ngāti Toa chief, 1840 This picture is a profile head and shoulders portrait of the Ngāti Toa chief Te Rauparaha, wearing a cloak, a pohoi ear ornament (made from albatross feathers), and a feather in his hair.
